Writers Kingston event #66 - National Gallery Lates III : June 30th 2023
The third and final event in partnership with the National Gallery in 2023 featuring Kingston University students and alumni! A remarkable project which allowed Kingston students to write new works for the page and performance on paintings in the National Gallery, supported by curator Joseph Kendra and WK director SJ Fowler. These were then performed to a full and generous audience during the Friday Lates program. A perfect example of how Writers Kingston provides Kingston University students with a chance to engage with opportunities at world respected institutions and large audiences.
This third event featured Safia Kamel and Marcia Knight Latter from KU.
“For centuries, the artforms of painting and poetry have been in dialogue, with each informing the other, or attempting to translate what makes them unique as their own media into another. Poet and performer SJ Fowler returns to the gallery to read new ekphrastic poems about chosen paintings in our collection, offering alternative interpretations of their meaning, history and standing. Fowler is joined by Gallery Educators alongside invited guests from Writers’ Kingston, students and staff from Kingston University, as well as further afield, for a tour and poetry performances around the Gallery.”
